to put on events like this that add to the cultural life that we all enjoy in this great city. so so thanks to them. [applause] and in a way that's what we're here to talk about this afternoon, the triumph of this city and all the cities, the triumph of the city, that's the title of harvard economics professor ed glaeser's book. it's about what's made cities around the world great, about the challenges that they have had to overcome and still face. we're going to talk about b that in a few minutes in the special context of this city with our panel, and we'll take questions from you as well later. but, first, to launch us off with a presentation, here's the author, professor ed glaeser. within our city contracts that the companies that do service for us do not own the data that they generate from us, that they will have a contractual obligation to share that with the city so that we can mine that to the rest of the city, that's advance of opportunities for everybody. i know at the heart of sharing this data, there is going to be a lot more jobs created, a lot more people out therein venting new ways to establish small businesses that will improve the way we live and work and play in the city. and we look forward to great events like a super bowl host or something like that, we're going to be able to give people a really rich amount of programs that they could access from here to santa clara to san jose. we can act regionally with our data and we can join and continue to be in the great city of san francisco. so, i want to thank all of the people, all of the different starting up companies here and those that are inventing with us, thank them for celebrating innovation month in such a exemplary way. and i think we're going to have a lot more to announce

cops have become targets. >> we do have a lot of law enforcement folks that live in our city. they are the victims of burglaries. >> reporter: most recently last night. three burglars already ransacking a police officer ice home here in southeast ann tee job when the officer came home. >> interrupted the burglary and three subjects fled out of the back of the home. >> reporter: the officer chased them but was forced to stop when they fired a warning shot in the air. months ago an officer who lived in brentwood shot and injured a suspected burglar. it did not appear the officer in yesterday's burglary was targeted. >> it appears to be completely random. like many cities in the bay areas, residential burglaries are on the rise and have been. >> reporter: a helicopter and search dogs could not locate the suspects. authorities have only a vague description of the three men. however they were able to recover some of that stolen property dropped during the chase. >> we're following a developing story in the east bay. police are investigating a shooting at the bay point bart station

by phone. >>> gangs and guns, a deadly mix in chicago that's getting more dire by the day. the city marked a grim milestone this week, 500 murders so far this year. it was a shooting on the city's west side thursday that pushed the number to 500. police say a 40-year-old man was shot in the head outside a convenience store. another troubling number, 270, that's the number of children who have been killed by guns in chicago in the last five years. back to this year's 500 homicides. that's up 50% from last year. it is the highest the murder rate has been in the city since 2008. it was 512 then. what's going on here? some say it's a police problem, that chicago police are simply outnumbered and outgunned. unable to handle the influx of kids who want to kill kids to make some cash or to climb the social ladder in chicago gang life. or is it a gun problem? the city has some of the toughest laws on the books. but the chicago police department says 87% of the homicides this year are a result of gun violence. so let's talk. joining me tonight for this conversation, tio hardiman. and harold pollack

, a christmas surprise no one wished for. a tornado caught on video as it touched down right this city center. emergency management officials say the twister left lots of damage in its wake blowing out first and second floor windows at the mobile infirmary medical center and the roof at the high school. so far no injuries or death, but wit trees and power lines down tens of thousands are without electricity. one store sent customers scrambling for cover. >> one customer looked out the window and said there's actually a tornado coming. i looked out and you could see the sparks flying and debris flying around. i got everybody together, about seven customers. everybody huddle around we need to go to the back. >> i probably hurt my baby grabbing her and huddling for protection. there was no time. >> reporter: it was a massive storm system that stretched across the nation. earlier a tornado touched down in mcneil, mississippi and several people suffered minor injuries. in texas, one near crockett decide to livestock feed store and high winds toppled trees killing a driver trying to remove another

daly city was killed in a police chase in pasadena. cbs 5 reporter joe vazquez went to the family's neighborhood. joe. >> reporter: you can see this apartment building behind me. this is where the ing family makes their home. they were in pasadena visiting relatives on christmas day. riding in a van, police were chasing a suspect through the streets. that suspect vehicle smashed into the van and killed two cousins including 11-year-old kendrick ing. let this is a photo according to kendrick's neighbor rita, she identified him from this facebook picture. she says the boy was always involved with sports and school and that his father was devoted to his children. for certain businesses like snowplowing businesses. then we have rain, plain old rain around new york city. at times you have seen snow mixing in. not expecting much by accumulation. by friday lingering snow showers across northern parts of new england. if you are doing travel through syracuse watch out for reduced visibility. attention turns to the next storm that we will be tracking across the country. informative stage ace cross the west. we are going to pull in some moisture from the gulf of mexico. developing low looks like this on friday bringing rain showers to little rock and even some thunderstorm down around mobile, alabama, where just yesterday, of course, we have that tornado touch down. then the low will move to the coast and we are likely to see snow from new york back towards pittsburgh and even cincinnati and plain old rain showers from norfolk all the way down through atlanta and florida. keep that in mind if you are doing any travel and along i-95, winds will be picking up with this one as well. and as we head towards sunday, a blustery day for places like boston, your hi

that shut down interstate 40 joust outside oklahoma city. texas got a double dose of bad weather, a 25-year-old man was killed near houston after a tree fell on his pickup. snow covered the ground in long view and turned dallas into a winter wonderland and blizzard warnings stretched from arkansas to pennsylvania. turning to mobile, alabama, windows were shattered and cars tossed off streets as this tornado touched down. >> oh my god, we need to go. it's right there. >> that's scary. several buildings damaged and several car accidents were blamed on the storm but no reports of serious injuries. emergency management officials tell cnn power has been restored to many customers, just over 7,000 in the dark, down from 23,000 last night. we head to mobile, christina leavenworth of w.e.a.r. in just about an hour weather officials will assess damage. christina, what are you hearing so far? >> reporter: good morning, carol. we are seeing a lot of damage here and it's widespread. the national weather service is saying the tornado touched down in five different locations, one of them here at murphy h

. but you can see from boston back into hartford, right down into new york city, it's all rain at this point. we did have a line of heavy thunderstorms move through new york city last night, producing torrential downpours and very gusty winds, but look at some of the snowfall totals so far. there are so many areas from new york through pennsylvania back into ohio that have already picked up a foot or more of snow. in connecticut, we picked up about six inches of snow before it did change over to rain, which it's going to stay as all rain at this point, but we do still have winter storm warnings and advisories posted, now mostly across central and northern new england, where we are still looking at additional snowfall accumulations. and look at that all across northern vermont, areas that want it, especially in the ski resorts, should pick up more than two feet of snow. the purple area is where we should see a foot or more, and areas back across massachusetts only an additional inch or so, especially inland areas where it is still all snow right now. as for wind gusts, the jersey shore, brick
